The Business of Art is an Art in Itself

Cleveland, OH - October 1, 2004 - New Art Gallery opens in Cleveland's Midtown Area.   Marketing art in Cleveland, OH is a challenging endeavor; simply having a gallery space alone may not bring the proprietor immediate rewards.  Realizing that it would take as much creativity to market my business as it takes the artists to create their work, I decided to use non-traditional approaches to pursue my mission of becoming the most effective marketing solution for area artists and to become the premier venue using art to enrich people’s lives. In this spirit, the Studio of 5 Rings was born.

What makes this gallery different?

  • Specifically target market to businesses, professionals and non-traditional markets, creating memorable environments for their customers, employees or work spaces.
    • Artworks are carefully selected to convey meaning to audiences
    • Gallery space is tasteful and professionally run
  • We take seemingly unrelated products and services and mix them in a complimentary fashion to create new markets, unique ambiance and top of the mind placement.
    • Art Gallery - Shows feature individual artists with unique work and rotate every four to eight weeks to keep the space and interest fresh.
    • Micro Winery - We bring in California grapes and ferment them into five delicious varietals right here in your own neighborhood.
    • Martial Arts Studio - Our most physical connection how art positively enriches our life.

What does our name mean?

In 17th century Japan, Musashi was both a prolific artist and legendary swordsman.  He authored the Book of 5 Rings outlining strategies for success in life and in swordsmanship.  He taught us that understanding the meaning of each brush stroke brings understanding of many things.  Just as Musashi used brush strokes to bring meaning to his audience, our gallery brings artworks that will enrich our lives through visual, literary and martial arts.

Rather than operating simply as a merchant, I created this special venue hoping to bring new meaning to the lives of those who are open to personal growth through art in its many forms.

Jenna Fournier Exhibit

Rocky River, Ohio - June 11, 2008 - Studio of 5 Rings presents original works from local artist Jenna Fournier.  The show will open with a wine, cheese and appetizer reception Friday June 20th from 5:00 - 9:00pm.  In addition to painting, Fournier is also a musician; she will perform some of her acoustic works the night of the opening. She will also be on hand to answer questions about her works.  The show will run until Saturday July 26th.

Fournier: Painting calms ...and allows me to create something that is purely personal, unlike the collaboration of writing and playing with my band.  I paint bright happy things to counteract the way I'm actually feeling, not because I sit around and think of flowers and rainbows. It is a personal effort to create positive art for people. There is enough violence, ugliness and pain out there; I don't need a violent painting to make me stop and think of that. I would rather see something that is hopeful and lovely, especially in times where I feel like giving up.  I also feel there is no shock value left in much of the 'post-modern' art - people are no longer shocked by violence, perverse art, vulgarity, nudity, any of it - it's merely a reflection of what's all around them.  Shocking art would be something moral.

I paint both to inspire others and also because I feel I must since I have been given this gift. The consistent randomness in my work represents my opinion of how much time is spent and wasted on things that don't matter. I don't follow many rules ... I feel art should be free, and inspire freedom in return - Freedom from self-absorption and  self-destruction.

Her work has also shown at the Atmosphere Gallery, Michael Stefan, the Molly Gallery, and Mainstream gallery in Vermillion.

Scott Mann Abstract Photography Exhibit

Rocky River, Ohio - March 28, 2008 - Studio of 5 Rings presents abstract digital works from local artist Scott Mann.  The show will open with a wine, cheese and appetizer reception Friday April 18th from 5:00 - 9:00pm.  Mann will be on hand to answer questions about his works.  The show will run until Saturday June 14th.

Scott Mann - Having worked as a model and photo assistant for hometown friend and now New York based photographer Steve Vaccariello, Scott developed an interest to be behind the lens.  It was Vaccariello who actually gave Scott his first camera.  Scott has been shooting a variety of media over the years.  His most recent interest is 'digital painting' on his images, which has created his latest works.

Mann's digital works begin with an ordinary image which he "morphs" into an abstract work.  The digital painting process first begins with one of his own original photos.  A working 'wet' palette is then created from the selected photo.  By using a mouse or pen palette, he uses a variety of brushes, styles, textures and techniques to create his abstract image.

Matt Dibble's "The Cavalcade Continues"

Rocky River, OH - December 27, 2007 - An exhibition of recent paintings by Matt Dibble will be opening at The Studio of 5 Rings on Friday, January 11th. Opening reception is Jan 11th from 5:00pm - 9:00pm. This show was curated by Jeffry Chiplis, a nationally recognized sculptor who invented and continues to explore sculptures made from recycled neon.

What drew Chiplis to the paintings was the combination of classical and modern figurative work along with their basis in drawing technique. He said, “The fact that they are paintings but based on drawings, with an abundance of skillful line quality, is one reason these works were chosen. There are also the illusory creatures, whose physiques have ties to Greek and Roman sculptures and frescoes. They are blended with this very modern technique of using unreal mutations to the human form. Dibble clearly has a foot in both past and present.”

In Greek mythology, the Chimera is a monstrous creature made of the parts of multiple animals. The human chimeras found in the paintings are often pictured in architectonic environments, a calm and smooth contrast to the misshapen and contorted figures.

Chiplis explained, “The specters that populate this collection are products of the artist’s imagination, but also physically human in respects so that we can recognize them. They are shocking to our typical sensibilities, and keep the viewer spellbound within their peculiar nature.” Based on a series of pen-and-ink drawings first exhibited two years ago, this collection “also hints at the darker side of  being human” according to Chiplis.

Concurrent with this exhibition, Dibble will be displaying pen-and-ink drawings at the Jonathan Shorr Gallery in New York City in a show curated by artist Michael Ricardo Andreev. Dibble will also be a featured artist in April at the Cleveland Heights-based St. Paul South Wing Gallery, where he will exhibit a survey of his paintings and drawings.

Dibble’s work (www.dibblepaintings.com) has been exhibited at the Cleveland Museum of Art, Spaces, and the Butler Institute of American Art, and is currently part of art collections at the Federal Reserve Bank, National City Bank, and various private collectors. More information about Jeffrey Chiplis, also a board member at Spaces gallery in Cleveland, can be found at www.agentofchaos.com/chiplis.

“Cavalcade Continues” will be on view at Studio of 5 Rings (20160 Center Ridge Rd. #210, Rocky River, OH  44116, 440-333-9700, ( www.studioof5rings.com) from January 11th through Feb. 23rd.

RF Biser Veterans' Day Photography Exhibit

Rocky River, OH - October 12, 2007:  The Studio of 5 Rings brings back RF Biser's photography exhibit for Veterans' Day. Biser is a Vietnam Veteran, displaying photos from both his tour in Vietnam and Washington D.C. monuments.  The show opens with a wine and cheese reception Friday Nov. 2nd from 5pm to 9pm.  The Exhibition will be on display until Saturday Nov. 10th.

Artist's Statement
We who made it out of The Nam have an obligation to tell the story the best way we can for those that didn't make it. One out of every forty eight soldiers didn't make it out alive. One in every eight was some sort of casualty.

The odds were not good, but we went, 2.8 million. We just had to make it one year and what a year it was. I bought my first 35mm when I was in Vietnam. I think I took better care of my Minolta than my M-16. I still have the camera but it has since been retired, in my display case. The photos that I took there are the ones that are priceless for me

I would like to thank Matt Cook for challenging and tasking me to put this showing together. This way I can fulfill my obligation the best way I can, with my photos.

"Born in Albuquerque, New Mexico and raised throughout the Southwest, my influences on my art have been vast and diverse.  A short-lived childhood and rapid emotional growth lead me to the arts very early in life.  How life has affected me emotionally, spiritually, and physically is reflected in my work.  Art has been my release, my resource for healing, and my route of personal expression throughout the entirety of my existence.   It is quite important to me that over 80% of my art is made of recycled products.  Structure and form interest me greatly.  I prefer to have high-contrast, three-dimensional, and interactive pieces.  The detail and time that is spent in the creation of my work is immense and indefinably extensive. Cleveland, OH - March 21, 2007 - The Studio of 5 Rings is relocating from Cleveland to Rocky River.  Our new address will be 20160 Center Ridge Rd., Rocky River, OH 44116.  Business operations will begin at our new location May 1, 2007; a grand opening date will be announced shortly.  Our business is expanding, and we are relocating to a place well-suited to our customers' needs.  The business will essentially remain the same - our art gallery will feature meaningful works of art, we are adding a new line of Chilean wines to expand our current wine list, and we will carry on our martial arts instruction.  We thank those who have been loyal supporters, and we look forward to seeing you at our new location!

Why We Are Moving?

  • Higher visibility retail location - located across from Target and a few blocks East of the new Westgate shopping area give us better exposure without traffic congestion.
  • Increased business hours - this suburban location will allow us to be open during more retail hours
  • Easier to find us - our second floor windows will give us great signage.
  • Convenient Free Safer Parking - we have 10 spaces in front and 35 spaces behind the building.
  • Located minutes from I-90 Hilliard exit
  • Closer proximity to other Ohio wineries in Westlake and Avon
  • Custom interior space give us better separation in business activities: wine making, art gallery and karate dojo all have separate spaces and improve our flexibility.

Studio of 5 Rings Focuses on Core Competencies

Cleveland, OH - March 19, 2007 - The Studio of 5 Rings is preparing for its next growth stage.  In order to make this happen, we are focusing on our core competencies by growing the wine-making, increasing our wine list, expanding the art gallery and recruiting more karate students.  As a result, we will eliminate some of the little-used services we used to offer:

  • New hours will be implemented at our new location Tues - Thur Noon - 6pm; Fri & Sat Noon - 9pm
  • All food sales will cease.  We used to purchase prepared foods from vendors for resale, but there was little demand for it.  We will continue to provide snacks as required by the Ohio Division of Liquor Control.  You can, however, still expect the same great appetizers and desserts at no cost that we have always provided.
  • The Internet Web Cafe' has been disconnected. We have changed ISP's, eliminated the wireless routers and sold computers we had for the cafe'.
  • In order to increase our business hours, we eliminated the ability for the public to rent our space for private use.
  • We had previously sponsored a poetry night, performance art, etc.  These will be eliminated, and the art gallery will focus on two and three dimensional visual art and installations.  Outside of  the visual art, we will look for instrumentalists whose talent will support gallery exhibitions and create ambiance during special events.
  • Option to lease artworks from us has been terminated. This allows us to spend more time focusing on recruiting more artists and cultivating shows.
  • We have eliminated prepaid wine delivery to all points in Cuyahoga county.  Instead, we will add the ability to either mail or fax us wine orders to ship to individual's homes (restrictions will apply).
  • We stopped offering sparkling wine by the glass or bottle as a regular menu item.  We may offer this on special events.
  • Fencing has been eliminated from the martial arts training.
  • Going forward, we will emphasize recruiting karate students for group classes and de-emphasize individual classes.
  • We removed links to the martial arts from our home page to reduce confusion for clients viewing our web site for the first time.  We are still teaching karate, but its presence has been minimized on our web site and in our new space.   We expect this change to make it easier for people to understand what we do and focus attention on the two activities that drive most of our business.

The Studio of 5 Rings Hosts Silk Scroll Collection For Chinese New Year

Cleveland, OH - Dec 29, 2006  Located on the outskirts of Cleveland's Asia Town, the Studio of 5 Rings will commemorate Chinese New Year by hosting Matthew Cook's collection of Chinese Silk Scrolls.  Officially Chinese New Year is Sunday Feb 18th this year, and the Collection will be on display from Feb. 22, 2007 - March 16, 2007.

Each piece has been collected from US Chinatowns: New York City, San Francisco, Toronto and Cleveland. The Chinese artists give the audience great meaning and detail using minimal brush strokes and strategic, vibrant accent colors.  Meaning comes from both cultural symbolism and from meditation.  I never tire studying them, and I take great care acquiring them.

The Studio of 5 Rings Hosts Don Cox Collection

Cleveland, OH - Dec 28, 2006 The Studio of 5 Rings will host the collection of Don Cox, an artist from Elyria.  The Collection will be on display from Jan. 18th - Feb. 17, 2007.  The show begins with a Sneak Preview Thursday Jan. 18, 2007, and the opening reception will be Friday Jan. 26, 2007.

Inspired by Picasso, Pollock and Matisse, he paints powerful pieces from his own perception of reality. His use of bold colors in complex layers draws the viewer into the art works.  His work provides a glimpse into how he views the outside world using his personal feelings as a filter.  Just as the open-backed guitar gives the viewer a look inside the guitar, so Cox's art gives the viewer a look inside the artist.

Cox's Artist Statement: "Art touches the soul. It either slaps you, or caresses you. In my paintings I am getting out feelings. They are pictures and landscapes of my inner world. What I experience and how I experience it comes out on the canvas. The process is somewhat unconscious, but I have control. Intuitively knowing what to do, and when, also plays a large part. My aim is to express who I am. My goal is to connect with people. Picasso, Matisse, and Pollock are my influences.

I took Interior Design at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga. I’ve also taken various art classes throughout my adult life; but, basically, I started painting because I felt the need to do it. Creating art gives me a sense of freedom and a feeling of connection to myself and others. When someone relates to my work, I am overwhelmed with gratitude that I have something to contribute to the world."

The Studio of 5 Rings Hosts Chicken Paprikash Cook-Off

Cleveland, OH - Dec 27, 2006 The Studio of 5 Rings will host its first Chicken Paprikash Cook-Off on Saturday January 20, 2007 at 7:00pm. This event originally started with Wayne and Diane Louis inviting friends to their home for a unique event.  Wayne (known as "Hurricane" Wayne) and Diane are regular customers at the Studio of 5 Rings.  They mentioned that the event has grown and asked if the Studio of 5 Rings would host it.  We chose January because it's a time when winter is long and days are short - a perfect time to get out of the house for something fun to do with friends and new folks to make friends.

We chose chicken paprikash for a few reasons: It has a long ethnic background, and many people have either made it or eaten it at some point in their lives; the number of variations for recipes to generate great tasting dishes seems limitless; many people are proud of their secret family recipes, and this is a great way for others to enjoy it; everyone does chili or rib cook-off's - this one is different and evokes a lot of curiosity; wines pair very well with these dishes.

Wine will be available exclusively from the Studio of 5 Rings.  As Downtown Cleveland's only winery, we make the following varietals: MERLOT, SHIRAZ, CHARDONNAY, PINOT GRIGIO and SWEET BERRY RED.

The art gallery will feature abstract artworks from Don Cox. He paints powerful pieces from his own perception of reality.  Cox resides in Elyria, OH.  His inspirations are Pollock and Matisse.  One can preview the show on the Studio of 5 Rings web site.

What's the atmosphere at the Studio of 5 Rings?  The ambiance is warm, intimate, quiet, and laid back. It's a pleasant surprise of New York industrial studio nestled in the austere exteriors of Superior's warehouses.  All of the lighting is indirect or candlelight.  We have bistro tables and chairs with fresh cut flowers, candles, excellent complimentary appetizers and desserts.  It's the perfect place to take a date to titillate the senses with great conversation, fine wines, cutting edge art, delicacies and a sense of a hidden away place.  Some of my patrons bring their friends to show them that they know where to find the coolest places to go out in Cleveland.

At the end of the event, here's what we hope people take away:  being with friends, making new friends, challenging expectations with all kinds of variations of paprikash, discovering hand-made wines and finding out that you can have a great time in downtown Cleveland!

Here's a list of rules for the Cook-Off event:

  • All contestants and attendees must register by Wednesday Jan. 17, 2007 by e-mail, voicemail or in person
  • Space will be limited so, RSVP soon!
  • This is an adult-only event
  • Contestants must arrive 6:30pm - 7:00pm and plan to stay until judging is complete around 10:00pm
  • Paprikash dishes should be at least two quarts and must be cooked and complete.  Contestants must bring serving utensil and warming dish, e.g. crock pot, hot plate, etc.
  • No entry fee for contestants or those guests who bring a dessert to share
  • Samples of each dish will be available at no charge to contestants and $1 per sample for other guests
  • Wine will be available exclusively from the Studio of 5 Rings.  No other alcohol will be permitted.
  • Contestants must take their belongings home at the end of the event.  We do not have storage facilities.

The Studio of 5 Rings Hosts Claudia Berlinski Collection

Cleveland, OH - Nov 30, 2006 The Studio of 5 Rings will host the collection of Claudia Berlinski. Her work consists of prints and mixed media pieces. She has a strong background in photography and often relies on the photographic image to anchor the work, while striving to include the mark of the artist’s hand.

The show will open with a sneak preview Thursday Nov. 30th from 5:00pm - 10:00pm. The opening reception is Friday Dec. 1st from 5:00pm - 10:00pm. The collection will remain on display until Jan. 6th, 2007.

About Berlinski's Work I also have a multi-layered agenda when making artwork. There is a great interest in the idea of universality in nature, and how I can weave this into a narrative with my personal feelings, thoughts and experiences. Sometimes it involves interaction between very specific singular items with purely visual relationships. At other times the analogy, while still visual, operates on a more conceptual level. As I look at the world I make connections between objects, environments and encounters.

Recently I developed a renewed interest in the relief print, drawn now to the physicality and texture of the medium. Much of my past work has been based in photography, but I’ve always had difficulty reconciling that process with the relief printing process. By creating stencils from photographically based imagery I am able to reproduce desirable textures and subtleties of lighting by hand that refer back to the photo.

International House of Blues Foundation: Through Our Eyes: The Great Migration

Cleveland, OH May 26, 2006 - The Studio of 5 Rings is taking the month of June to make a departure from its traditional art shows to encourage our local youth to get involved in the arts. This was made possible through the International House of Blues program for youth participation with the arts. The following is a release by Tracy Glenn detailing the display:

As part of Action for the Arts 2006, The International House Of Blues Foundation (IHOBF) is presenting student accomplishments and artistic works to raise awareness of the importance of the arts and highlight positive outcomes form youth participation in arts programs.

Through a partnership with IHOBF, one fifth grade classroom at Clara Westropp School (Cleveland Municipal School District) participated in an IHOBF pilot program titled Through Our Eyes: The Great Migration. The program combines language, visual and musical arts and brings a visiting artist into the classroom setting. An eight-panel student artwork from this program and visual artworks created in Make An Impression programs will be on display at the House of Blues during the months of May and July. In an effort to bring student artwork into the community, Matthew Cook, owner of downtown gallery, Studio of 5 Rings (located at 2400 Superior Avenue, #201, Cleveland, OH 44114) will show the student created work in the month of June.

The International House of Blues Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization dedicated to bringing the arts to schools and communities through programs that promote cultural understanding and creative expression. IHOBF programs teach about aspects of American culture and history through blues music and folk art, provide arts learning experiences for youth and support teachers in integrating arts and cultural content into classroom curriculums. IHOBF-Cleveland is one of nine IHOBF locations nationwide. The IHOBF is supported by the House of Blues, House of Blues Foundation Room members and other public and private donors. Matt Dibble’s “Cavalcade of Oddballs” Collection Opens at The Studio of 5 Rings

January 5, 2005—Cleveland, Ohio—An exhibition of pen-and-ink drawings by Matt Dibble will be opening at The Studio of 5 Rings on Friday, January 20th . These drawings were selected by Christopher Pekoc, a nationally known artist and drawing instructor at Case Western Reserve University.

While better known for his large abstract oil paintings, Matt Dibble has produced a series of seldom seen pen-and-ink drawings that he began during his student days and has continued to the present. Pekoc began to collect those drawings years ago and explains,   “Creative ideas are like precious metals removed from the depths of   mines; some come from richer veins than others. I feel that these drawings of Matt's come from one of his richest veins.

Cleveland architect and arts connoisseur Peter vanDijk was one of the first collectors to purchase one of Dibble’s drawings in the late 1980s.

Dibble’s work has been exhibited at the Cleveland Museum of Art, Spaces, and the Butler Institute of American Art, and is currently part of art collections at the Federal Reserve Bank, National City Bank, and other Cleveland-area firms.

Says Pekoc, “I have long admired Matt Dibble’s highly imaginative ink drawings, recognizing the skill required to create them and their extremely personal nature. His elegant line fills these small worlds with mystery and beauty. This work of his inspires me.”

Pekoc began his own career with pencil drawing, and is attracted to drawing, in part, because of its history as the earliest form of human visual expression. He explains that one of the most difficult ways to draw is with pen and ink. “ Drawing of this kind calls for a sure and sensitive hand because once a line is in place it cannot be erased.”

“Cavalcade of Oddballs” will be on view at Studio of 5 Rings (2400 Superior Ave., Suite #201 Cleveland, OH  44114 216.771.0830) from January 20th through March 4th.

The Studio of 5 Rings is open every Friday 5:00pm - Midnight and Saturday 7:00pm - Midnight.  Come to the opening Friday Jan. 20, 2006 between 5:00pm and 8:00pm for complimentary refreshments.

Gallery Receptions Scheduled for 3rd Friday Each Month

Cleveland, OH - May 6, 2005 - In an effort to increase the awareness for the arts in the Downtown and Midtown areas, the Studio of 5 Rings works with the Artcade by hosting gallery receptions the 3rd Friday each month.  Having more galleries open at the same time will help to draw more people to experience more of the arts available in the area.  By working together, we hope to create and maintain a new identity for the arts in this area.

The Studio of 5 Rings hosts shows dedicated to only one artist at a time.  This provides an artistic experience that is both focused and meaningful.   Shows are changed every four to eight weeks to keep the shows and the energy fresh each time people visit our gallery.  All art works on display can be previewed in our on-line virtual galleries http://www.studioof5rings.com/OnlineArtGallery.htm.

  • Receptions are Fridays from 5:00pm to 8:00pm.  The wine bar is open until midnight.

Artist's Statement:

... I hope to offer some insight to the viewer into the notion that photography is not just a ‘mechanical’ art; it is capable of being painterly and idyllic, but also very rough and geometric. I hope that I am offering an alternative to the generally accepted association that photography equals strict documentation by exhibiting to the viewer the artistic, and abstract potential of this medium.  My work tends to be experimental, diverse, and embodies many different photographic techniques with subject matter that can be discovered by everyone, no matter what the audiences age level.
